R-29R missile

The development started in 1973, was put into service in 1977. The General Designer is V.P. Makeyev, the Leading Designer is A.L. Zaitsev.

R-29RL missile

R-29RK missile

R-39 missile

Results of activities on the third-generation sea-based missiles

The deployment of strategic nuclear forces in the USSR was completed. The marine component included four intercontinental missiles: three liquid-propellant missiles (two with a multiple warhead and one with a single warhead) and one solid-propellant missile with a multiple warhead.

Up to now the most advanced and efficient third-generation missiles R-29RM and R-29RMU are distinguished by the highest power-mass perfection among domestic and foreign strategic liquid- and solid-propellant sea- and ground-based missiles. The missiles can be equipped with ten or four warheads of the low or middle power class. The firing accuracy permits launching from the ocean areas of combat patrolling and basing sites. The firing accuracy is highly competitive with that of intercontinental ground-based missiles. The three-stage missile has no analogs among domestic and foreign liquid-propellant combat missiles. The missiles have the future development potential, which, if realized, will effect favourably the maintenance of combat characteristics of strategic sea-based nuclear forces, for example, due to accommodation of more effective combat loads, including penetration aids.
